| 説明 | An unidentified Class 47 stands at Norwich station with the 11:12 service for Birmingham New Street. I am not sure of the year but it is probably around 1987. Class 31s were the mainstay of the Norwich - Birmingham route in the 1980s, and a Class 47 would have a more unusual choice for this service. On this particular day I got chatting to the driver of the train, who told me that if I came back at around 5:30 I could ride in the cab of the loco on the loco-hauled set he would be driving to Great Yarmouth (I think this was the once daily through service from Liverpool Lime St). He was as good as his word, and I rode in the secondman's seat from Norwich to Brundall. That's an experience I will never forget, with the noise of the 31 accelerating away from Norwich, and then my surprise at the fact that we were basically travelling along at 70mph in complete darkness. It made me realise how much skills was involve in driving a train. |
