説明 | A busy scene at Norwich on Saturday 3rd October 1987. This was the penultimate day of that year's summer timetable (remember when we had those!) and thus the final day of that season's 'Summer Saturday' workings to and from Great Yarmouth. In the centre of the photo an unidentified Class 47 locomotive is seen departing Norwich with the 0950 Great Yarmouth-Newcastle service - a destination which only received through trains on summer Saturdays. The train has reversed at Norwich, and I am guessing that the 47 has been attached here following arrival. On the right is a Class 31 (31/4?) loco - which were a common sight in East Anglia at this time, and the regular motive power for trains between Norwich and Birmingham. On days such as this they would frequently be seen operating trains from the West Midlands and north East of England on the final leg of their journey from Norwich to Yarmouth. On the left is a Class 86 electric locomotive - employed on the newly electrified Norwich-London route. At this time each London-bound train would have a 'fresh'; locomotive, with the loco from the incoming train being uncoupled, and then running light to the station throat and being stabled here until the next arrival from London. I am not sure where this particular locomotive was heading - I have a feeling the stabling point was normally further to the left. |
