説明 | Albert Einstein, the so called “father of modern physics” took up a lecturing post at Princeton University in 1933 when he migrated to America. He remained affiliated with Princeton until he died in 1955. The university was established in 1746 and is one of the eight Ivy League Universities in America. It is generously endowed with private funds and has produced 33 Nobel Prize winners. It has around 7,500 students so it is a small university. Its origins were linked to the Presbyterian Church but it has no direct affiliations with it these days. During the War of Independence the British occupied Nassau Hall on the campus which is not far from the Battlefield of Princeton which we will also visit. When the British left a large cannon behind it was buried in the lawns outside Nassau Hall! (Nassau Hall is the oldest campus building, completed in 1756.) Princeton is usually ranked third among American universities after Harvard and Yale and it was the fourth US University established. Michelle Obama graduated from Princeton. Most of the campus buildings were built after the Civil War in Victorian gothic style. Princeton University backs onto Carnegie Lake, funded by Andrew Carnegie the great Robber Baron. Princeton is primarily a “college town” with around 30,000 inhabitants in the district. It is roughly equidistant from New York and Philadelphia. A group of 6 Quaker families settled the area in the 1690s. The name Princeton for the township emerged in 1724. There are a number of houses dating from the mid 1700s in Princeton but most old houses date from the mid 1800s. Battlefield of Princeton 1777. After a number of defeats General Washington had success at the Battle of Princeton in January 1777. The battle spread across the fields right up to the University of Princeton and Nassau Hall about 3 kms away. Washington used surprise to obtain this victory. A colonnade designed by Thomas Walter who designed the US Capital building serves as a memorial to both the Redcoat and Rebel soldiers killed there. Clarke House nearby is where General Hugh Mercer an American General died a few days after the battle. The 600 acre park is now a forest and arboretum with walking trails and good views. |
