説明On display at Irlam StationThomas the Tank EngineStepping up to the plate! The step you see here originated from the Peckett locomotive engine No. 21. The engine, known as a 0-4-0 fireless locomotive, was the only one of its type ever built and was one of eight locos owned by the C.W.S. Soap Works in Irlam, the other seven being conventional saddle tank engines.Delivered to the Soap Works in March 1955 the 0-4-0 was designated No. 8 and used to move goods around the works. Fuelled with steam from a boiler within the factory, the fireless engine was an early eco-friendly locomotive as it did not produce any polluting smoke, releasing steam only. It spent its whole working life at the factory. When the Soap Works closed in 1968 and the loco engines were sold off, the fireless No.8 failed to find a buyer and so the Co-op's directors presented it to the council. In February 1969, with its cab and boiler fittings removed, it was placed on a concrete plinth in the George Thomas Recreation Ground in Prince's Park, close to Irlam baths in full view from the A57. Residing there for over 30 years, the engine was enjoyed by several generations of sachool children. In 2005, when plans were being formulated to revitalise the playground, a proposal was made to cut up the locomotive for scrap. A wave of dismay swept through the community and in response The Rotary Club of Irlam resolved to help find a solution. The project became known as 'Thomas' and following lots of research and help from volunteers the tank engine was finally moved to its current location on the Cadishead by-pass. The Rotary Club are committed to the ongoing preservation of 'Thomas as part of the district's railway heritage and for current and future generations to enjoy.Sixty years after first starting it's working life at the C.W.S. Soap Works, the engine's step has a new life at the cafe bistro '1923' at Irlam Station House.
