説明 | Kow Plains pastoral station was established as a leasehold property by James Smith in 1859. The cookhouse and stables were built around that time. The station covered around 5,000 acres and had a track directly south through what we now know as the Big Desert to Nhill district. In 1867 Dugald Macpherson took over Kow Plains station and increased the area to around 81,000 acres. The main homestead was undoubtedly built after Macpherson took over the property in 1867. Native Cypress pine which is white ant resistant was used for the homestead and the outbuildings. The stables were also built during the 1860s presumably by Macpherson. The stables were also used as a blacksmith workshop. The old toilet beneath some pepper trees is believed to have been built in the 1870s. A crushed limestone and gypsum quarry was operated on the property from 1961 to the mid-1980s and ruins of the mining and crushing equipment is still there. In 1998 the Mildura Rural City purchased the homestead and outbuildings and a local community group has worked on the restoration of this heritage station complex. Kow Plains station was reduced in size from 1910 when the railway to Murrayville was being constructed and the land was being subdivided for cereal farmers. |
