説明 | Native yearlong-green perennial tufted C3 grass; stems are erect and to 80 cm tall. Leaves are fine (0.6-1.2 mm wide), inrolled, usually rough to touch and hairless to shortly-hairy; sheaths are 3-5 mm wide and slightly loose. Flowerheads are contracted or open panicles to 30 cm long. Spikelets are 9-15 mm long and 1-flowered; glumes are larger than the lemma; lemma is densely hairy, narrow and elongate, with a 3-7 cm long, scythe-shaped awn. Flowers in most months, but mostly spring and early summer. Usually found on soils that are shallow, lighter textured, well-drained and low fertility; often on hillslopes and where ground cover is reduced. Native biodiversity. Very drought tolerant and rapidly colonises bare areas. Seeds can damage grazing stock; reduce by heavy grazing or slashing at early flowering (this may reduce persistence) or removing stock till seeds fall. Most productive in cooler months when it can be a useful source of green forage in native pastures. Mature growth is low quality, with little use as a standing haystack. Grazing tolerant; palatable when green, more so to sheep. Unresponsive to fertiliser and tends to decline under super and clover application. |
