| 説明 | During commemoration celebrations in 1992, 13 December was declared Abel Tasman Day by then Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon Graeme Lee. In his speech he said that this was not only a fitting tribute to one of history’s greatest navigators but also to the contribution made by 70,000 New Zealanders of Dutch descent. Sadly the concept failed to catch on and Abel Tasman Day is not celebrated or well known today.Shown here is the orchestra which travelled from Abel Tasman’s birthplace, the city of Grootegast to be part of the commemoration celebrations. The group was part of a 100-strong delegation from the Netherlands which toured the country and took part in festivities from Rotorua to Golden Bay. The latter was the most significant place as it was here that Abel Tasman’s ships, Zeehan and Heemskerck, dropped anchor.Reference: R18379161 collections.archives.govt.nz/web/arena/search#/?q=R18379165 For more information email Research.Archives@dia.govt.nz For updates on our On This Day series and news from Archives New Zealand, follow us on Twitter www.twitter.com/ArchivesNZ Material supplied by Archives New Zealand |
