説明 | This photo was taken on December 15, 2007 on White Bear Lake, in the city of the same name in Minnesota. It shows an unusual form of hoarfrost or “surface hoar,” in which large “ferns” of ice, about the size of ping pong balls, appear to “sprout” directly from the frozen lake surface. This may be due to an unusual combination of near 0°F temperatures, surface imperfections caused by the ruts of snowmobiles and ATVs, and a layer of liquid water between the ice and snow in nearby ice patches. This photo was taken at outdoor temperature of about 5°F in the late morning. |
