説明 | January 17, 2008 (Calgary) – On Thursday, January 17th, 2008 at 10:30 am, as the heads of some of the world’s largest and most powerful oil corporations discuss their “vision” for the Alberta tar sands at the Canadian Oil Sands Summit, activists took to the streets outside the Telus Conference Centre to protest the tar sands industry itself. An installation of government officials with their heads in the “tar sands” was designed to visually express how determined these government officials are to ignore the Alberta public and cater to Big Oil. “There has been complete neglect of the environmental, social, and economic concerns surrounding the existence and expansion of the Alberta tar sands,” states Stop the Tar Sands (STS) member Anna Gerard. “It’s time our government took its head out of the tar sands and started listening to the growing concerns of regular Albertans rather than those of big oil.”Complete with suits and briefcases, prop “government officials” posed, literally, with their heads in the tar sands in front of the Calgary Telus Conference Centre. A few STS activists were present at the display with a banner to show their disgust with the way the tar sands industry insists on conducting business. “Companies such as Syncrude, StatOil and Total are talking about how to increase the destruction. Yesterday Conservative government MLA, Greg Melchin addressing the conference questioned the science of climate change itself. It’s time we separate oil and state and stop this growing climate crime. It’s time to give our children a future we can live with,” explained Anna Gerrard. stoptarsands.wordpress.com/www.greenpeace.org/canada/en/campaigns/tarsands |
