説明 | This view of West Africa was extracted from the 'Map of Africa' plate in an Samuel Augustus Mitchell's School and Family Geography (1839) published in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There are a number of features on this map worthy of notice: The location of British and Portuguese settlements in the Senegambia region, the British Colony of Sierra Leone (Freetown shown as "Free T"), the American Colony of Liberia, and the mythological "Mountains of Kong" separating Upper Guinea and Soudan.Sources:The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection, www.davidrumsey.comThomas J. You can hear the author of this book interviewed for NPR's national morning show "All Thinks Considered" here.-Added to the Cream of the Crop pool as my personal favorite. If you like this one, you should also check out the this map of the city where the atlas was engraved and printed. |
