説明 | The Chumas Indians once occupied the California coast from Malibu Canyon northward to Morrow Bay in San Luis Obispo County, and at one time numbered some 15,000 people. When the Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed up the coast in 1542, Chumash Indians paddling offshore in their plank canoes told them the names of several villages on the coast nearby. This village was near Point Mugu, in Ventura County. The Chumash are noted for their carvings in steatite, for their basketry, and for their well-fashioned plank canoes. In this scene, a man is emerging from the sweat-house, while others put the finishing touches on a reed-thatched hut. The women on the right are preparing food while a man of rank, wearing a sea mammal pelt robe, surveys his village. |
