説明 | CAMP ZAMA, Japan - When a crowd gathers around a homeplate, it's often to give the star player who hit the winning run at the bottom of he ninth inning a hero's welcome. Although the softball field at Camp Zama was void of cracking bats and cheering fans, it nonetheless created an atmosphere of excitement that emulated a championship series. Army Sgt. Jason C. Cabe, an intelligence specialist serving in Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Japan, stood in the batter's box and swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. The Sept. 3, 2015, reenlistment ceremony marked the beginning of a three-year extension of Cabe's commitment to serve his country as a noncommissioned officer. "I did this for my family," said Cabe, a native of Barrigada, Guam. "Their love and support has helped mold me into the proud Soldier, husband and father that I am today. Offering them comfort and stability by staying connected with the Army's close-knit community is the best way I know to show my appreciation."Army Capt. Christopher E. Mullis, commander, HHC, USARJ, complimented Cabe's choice of venue. "This field speaks highly of America's pastime," said Mullis as he addressed the crowd of Soldiers, families and Department of Defense civilians gathered around homplate. "Sgt. Cabe's loyalty to his country reflects the unique customs and competitive spirit that originated here.""I chose this spot because I love baseball and softball," said Cabe. "As an avid [softball] player, I have many fond memories on this field. Today I cherish one more memory with two of the best teams in the world ... my [battle buddies] and my family.Photo and story by Sgt.John L. Carkeet IV, U.S. Army Japan |
