説明 | It had been a long evening and was turning into a long night. We were officially "moved out" of our apartment, but it was taking a good deal of time to finish the task. Lots of -- for lack of a better word -- crap to pick up from the floor, decide whether or not to keep and either box for keeping, or put in the carton to go to the dumpster. The dumpster itself was at the other side of the complex, perhaps the equivalent of a city block to walk in order to deposit a load of trash. While this was normally just a nuisance, after the fifth trip or so, my will to make the journey was becoming increasingly depleted. I continued to gather more waste to dispose of, and I was becoming wearier by the moment.Outside of the door sat two pumpkins. It was then the second day of December, and the orange gourd-cousins had been purchased a few days prior to Halloween. We had ended up carving some other pumpkins at a friend's party, so these had never been subjected to the knife. Thus far, their thick orange skins had warded off any attempt at bacteria or fungus to compromise their structure; they were as fresh and firm as the day they'd been purchased. The thought of having to haul two rather weighty pumpkins to the dumpster was too much for me. I picked them up and skirted around behind the apartment complex. Out back was a grassy field without much to show but a few cedars, some weeds and many anthills. Someday, I am sure that it will be the site of a new development, but then and there (and currently still) it was empty. Rain had left a large, slow-drying puddle in the field. I lobbed one, then the second pumpkin. They landed into the puddle with satisfying "sploosh" sounds, and bobbed contentedly. I imagined that the person to mow the field next would get an interesting surprise when he hit those pumpkins. So, today, on the eleventh of December, I came by the apartment to get the mail. As I was finishing, I looked out across the field and there they were. After nine days, still floating happily in the ever-present pond-puddle. I could not resist taking a photo.I may no longer live at the apartment complex, but it appears that I have left my mark. |
