説明Some photographs taken during our weekly history/ photo walking group last Friday. Inverness when the sun shines is beautiful - and nowhere more so than the bottom end of Church Street, the oldest and most interesting part of the City Centre. Sadly, it is an area not so well frequented by visitors (or indeed locals) as it is at the far end from the main shopping area and other "attractions".Jewels in the crown of the area include one of the oldest buildings in the city, Dunbar's Hospital - built in 1668 from the stones of Cromwell's Citadel (the stones for which had been taken from various religious buildings in the area). Dunbar's has fulfilled a variety of purposes over the years, including being the original Royal Academy, the Poorhouse and Infectious Diseases Hospital, a Fire Station and storage for the Town Gallows. The ground fIoor is now used partly as a restaurant, and the other half as a pop-in centre for the over-50s. The upper floors are in use as residential apartments. Across the road is the original Parish Church of Inverness, the Old High, which stands above the river Ness on St Michael's Mount where there has been a church for well over one thousand years. It was there that St Columba preached in 565 AD during his visit to Inverness to convert King Brude (Leader of the Pictish Nation) to Christianity. The current church was rebuilt not long affter the Battle of Culloden (1746) and its predecessor was used to house Jacobite prisoners pending transfer to London for trial. The churchyard was used to execute sick and injured Jacobite prisoners (to avoid the need to transport them south).Down on the riverside adjacent, is the Free North Church - which has the tallest church spire in the city and (apart possibly from St Andrews Cathedral) is Inverness's prettiest church. Built between 1890 and 1893 it was designed by Alexander Ross, who designed a great many beautiful buildings in Inverness and around the Highlands. Of all his works, this has to be one of the best. He also designed St Andrew's Cathedral in Inverness -but the two buildings are so completely different. So if you find yourself in Inverness, take a wee walk down Church Street - slightly "off the beaten track" but well worth a visit in terms of peace, tranquility, historical interest and beautfiful structures.
