It is located northeast of the city of Lille, about 7 km from the centre.The Saint-Martin church is a Catholic church in the city of Croix, in the Nord department of France. It depends on the deanery of Roubaix of the archdiocese of Lille, and it is dedicated to Saint Martin, apostle of the Gauls. The church was listed as a historical monument on June 9, 2005.With the population growth due to industrialization during the 19th century, Croix needed a new church, the old one, founded in the 12th century, having been sold as national property and demolished in 1799. A new church was built in 1805, but it quickly became too small. This one was built from 1847 to 1851 by the architect Charles Leroy, in late neo-Gothic style. It was the first church of this style built in the region.The church was enlarged from 1879 to 1883 by Alphonse Dubuisson on the initiative of the priest, Father Deran. A transept was built on the site of the choir and the new choir placed beyond. The church was ravaged during the First World War. Father Decock had it restored in the 1920s, and the interior was covered with immense murals The brick and stone church comprises a nave and two aisles ending in an apse and preceded by a narthex, flanked by the Chapel of the Dead and the chapel of the baptismal fonts. A high bell tower rises above the narthex.The organ dates from 1880; it was restored in 2007 by the Lille organ builder Antoine Pascal and the organ case dates from 1926. February 2020, a three-manual digital organ whose speakers are installed behind the façade of the organ pipes, which it replaced because it again required restoration. Its cost is €40,000.The church has a large remarkable painting by Pharaoh de Winter representing a Lamentation of Christ , central panel of an immense triptych whose two other panels are preserved in the church of Saint-Vincent de Marcq-en-Barœul . There are also frescoes and paintings related to the religious history of Croix. The interior is entirely painted in the troubadour style. It was restored between 2010 and 2015. The stained glass windows from the end of the 19th century were restored in 2004. |
