| 説明 | "I caught something in the California desert… I got the gold bug. It bites many geologists early on in their career. They don’t know what to expect, but over the course of one field trip you can feel it grab hold. It’s not a venomous desert insect, but rather the excitement that comes from exploring for ores. Last week we spent one day in the Panamint Valley visiting gold mines. We were there to inspect a miner’s operation and check his bond status. What I thought would be a quick visit turned into a much more exciting stay. We started in the Valley where it was 117 degrees Fahrenheit and I could barely stay attentive while my supervisor and the head mine geologist swapped stories. The sweat rolling down their brows clearly didn’t bother them. From the valley we climbed nearly 1000 feet to the mine in the mountains where the temperature dropped to a tolerable 92. On the way up the mountain we passed many historic mining ruins of the Ballarat mining camp before reaching two modern looking adits in the side of the mountain. Outside were some supply sheds and equipment for sorting ore. After we finished touring the upper adit we were told to wait outside for a show. In the background we could hear a drill echoing through the lower adit. The miners were drilling holes to set charges and blast away some more rock from the ore zone. As I wait eagar with curiosity on top of the hill, workers exit the mine one at a time to take cover safely away from the entrance. As soon as everyone is in position, a thunderous boom followed by a rumble and a plume of smoke pour out of the adit. That was the sound of a safe and successful blast, making the mine ever so longer. After the smoke cleared, the miners went back inside the mountain to visit a newly exposed surface of ore.
