The dedication was at Christmas Midnight Mass, 1854 as the first cathedral of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. It was the first cathedral in California to be built for the purpose of serving as a cathedral. When it opened, it was the tallest building in San Francisco and all of California.The church is named for Mary, the Mother of Jesus, under the title of the Immaculate Conception. |
