| 説明 | Tue 08/01/2006 09:25 Marit larsen's new album breaks the bubblegum lolita crap of her previous pop duo M2M and gets dirty with campy folk tunes and irresistible moody hooks. If you think the girls of M2M (remember their annoyingly catchy brand of pop?) are lousy pre-fabs, think again. While the group founded by the two Norwegian darlings broke up over *gasp!* a very big spat between the two former best friends, both of them have gone the solo route and have, consequently, released their debuts. First was Marion Raven, the brunette who, in the latter period of M2M, shed the cutesy image in favor of a more bimbo-type look that record label execs and producers must've loved because they quickly picked up the haphazardly done and appallingly irrelevant collection of songs that felt more like listening to Avril Lavigne being drowned in the Baltic Ocean with a piano instead of an artist gone solo looking for her own voice. That's where Marit Larsen, the other half of M2M with the curly blonde hair and the lower, less annoying voice, differs. On her debut Under the Surface, Marit treads deeper water, it seems, in order to keep her career afloat, and the best part is that, quite simply, it works! This is how a solo album should be made after a group breaks up: with a full band of talented musicians, a fresh sound, and honest references to past mistakes with regard to a previous musical engagement. Granted, Under the Surface is hardly the ground breaking stuff reserved for the most influential artists of our time, but that's what makes the album worth a listen: it's fun to listen to and it doesn't try to be something it's not. A brilliant effort by an artist who, clearly, has talent, to sing in her own voice regardless of mainstream success and sales (her album is on a Norwegian (independent?) record label and is currently being sold only in that country.
