| 説明 | Mittagong. Mittagong was created in 1867 with the coming of the railway but early inns existed here to service early travellers from the 1840s and Australia’s first iron foundry was here from 1848. In May of 1865 the first blast furnace in Australia was lit successfully in Mittagong. The Fitz Roy Iron Works gave the name of New Sheffield to the district but knowledge of the site location was lost until 2004 when excavations were dug for a new Woolworths Shopping Centre. The government placed a heritage order on the site and a full scale archaeological survey was undertaken which discovered remains of the rolling mills, puddling furnaces, boiler houses, chimney bases, cupola furnaces and other ancillary structures. Woolworths has funded interpretation of this significant archaeological site which pre dates the town. The current town of Mittagong was created in 1867 with the coming of the railway line from Sydney. It boomed in the 1880s and 1890s when many fine buildings were erected including the Catholic Church (1889), Presbyterian Church (1885), the School of Arts (1899), Courthouse (1886),and the new Post Office (1887) etc. The largest structure, now derelict and vandalised was the Maltings built to supply malt to breweries throughout NSW. The Malting Co of NSW was formed in 1898 and the malting works opened in 1899 at Mittagong because of the good supply of excellent quality water. Barley was grown locally to supply the malting works. Tooth Company purchased the works in 1905. They extended the works with new malting houses in 1916. Sadly the works closed in 1980 and are now vandalised but heritage listed. |
