説明 | The Kessock Bridge from the South Kessock Ferry Pier - I thought the black and white effect would be effective.A ferry has plied between South Kessock (City of Inverness) and North Kessock (Ross & Cromarty) for centuries, providing a short trip for pedestrians and vehicles across the narrows of the Beauly Firth (a sea loch formerly known as "Loch Beauly"), an arm of the Moray Firth/North Sea. This route cut out the long deviation to the west to where the firth becomes the River Beauly with a bridge over it.The Ferry service was latterly run by the Highland Council (and before 1975 jointly by the Town Council of Inverness and the County Council of Ross & Cromarty). The ferry service was rendered redundant by the opening of the Kessock Road Bridge which opened in 1982 and which was part of a new trunk road section from Inverness to the north which included bridged crossings of several firths to avoid the need for travellers to follow the many inlets.Sadly the South Kessock Ferry Terminal is now a quiet place, whereas once it was a busy place from early morning till late at night. The pier however, although no longer used, is an ideal place to admire the views to east (Kessock Bridge and beyond), north (to the village of North Kessock) and west (up the firth to the mountains). |
