説明 | CORVALLIS, Ore. – Monarch butterfly populations have declined over recent decades due to degraded habitat, but Oregon landowners like Warren and Laurie Halsey are making great strides to improve monarch habitat on private lands, with technical and financial assistance from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Milkweed is a critical component of monarch habitat because it’s the only plant on which they will lay their eggs, and it’s a vital food source for monarch caterpillars. The Halsey’s have 19 active milkweed clusters throughout their 270-acre ranch in Benton County, Oregon. The Halsey’s voluntarily signed up for the NRCS wetland reserve program and enrolled 69 acres into a 30-year wetland easement in 1998. NRCS provided financial and technical assistance to restore the wetland hydrology and plant native grasses, wildflowers, trees and shrubs throughout the easement, with additional technical support from USFWS and other partners.
