| 説明 | Fitzroy Falls and the valley of the Kangaroo River. The high plateau of the Southern Highlands drops away with sheer sandstone cliffs to the valleys below. Despite the escarpment separating the two regions they have a close history. The top layer of sandstone is the Hawkesbury Sandstone laid down under the sea 5 million years ago. Great water erosion occurred of the upper layers and the valleys 600 metres below the highland plateau are rich and fertile. Waterfalls cascade down the escarpment at places like Fitzroy Falls. The Kangaroo River also rises at a cascade and it eventually flows into the Shoalhaven River. George Evans was the first white explorer in this region in 1812 when he explored Jervis Bay and tramped up into Kangaroo Valley. Dr Charles Throsby came through the valley in 1818 searching for an easy route to the Goulburn Plains. Oxley came exploring a year later and Throsby again in 1821. A Captain Brooks received a free land grant of 700 acres in the valley in 1817 but it was 1821 before he had cattle in the valley. Red Cedar cutters moved into the valley to clear it in the early 1820s. A million feet of red cedar as taken out of the valley in just one year in 1828 and most of that was taken illegally. James Berry of Coolangatta had workmen up here felling cedar trees by the mid 1820s. |
