説明 | The dull morning light settles a blunt paleness on this ancient seat of Manx governance and power. The castle is built upon the rock of a tiny island named St.Patrick's Isle - another confirmation of the powerful spread of Ireland's Christianity throughout these western lands. Within the castle there remain the ruins of an ancient 13th. century cathedral dedicated to St. German, and Fenella's Tower, part of Bishops' Palace which is featured in Sir Walter Scott's 1823 English novel: Peveril of the Peak; whose settings reach from Derbyshire's Peak District to Peel. I had hoped to explore this connection at the castle but alas, its a case of the early-bird being denied his worm, my morning passing precedes the castle opening hours. But I am so enjoying my visit to the Isle of Man that I'm pretty sure I'll be back again for a bit of leisurely tourist-time pottering about, in the meantime the walk beckons. In the 11th. century the Viking Magnus Barefoot held his court here in Peel Castle, more protectively shod than poor old Magnus, its time to get on with my walk around his lovely island. |
