説明 | Red-tailed Coral Snake (Micrurus mipartitus) - Buenaventura Reserve, EcuadorA Micrurus of any species had become my white whale for a lengthy period, I had worked in Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador and made many recreational trips into their range and had never managed to find one. Other people around me who weren't looking for them would encounter them but not me, finally this changed. This is a beautiful young Micrurus mipartitus, specifically the Micrurus mipartitus decussatus subspecies, one of the two species of coral snake that live within Buenaventura Reserve. Several of us came across this individual on a night hike through the forest. Really a glorious snake, a bit of a challenge to work with though, very twitchy, relatively fast and nervous, and a potent venom were all factors needing to be dealt with. This snake may have been small but it certainly deserved plenty of respect; M. mipartitus has a potent mainly neurotoxic venom which is fully capable of killing an adult human. In fact I have come across a variety of sources saying this snake has one of the more potent venoms of all the snakes in South America. Having said that, I must say that this species like other coral snakes is reclusive and very unlikely to bite, nearly all bites occur when trying to catch or molest the snake. Needless to say the rhyme "Red touch yellow, kills a fellow. Red touch black, friend of jack" on differentiating coral snakes from mimics in North America is particularly useless with this species and shouldn't be used with South American species in general. I am not satisfied with my photos of this species as my camera was malfunctioning and it severely limited my shooting options, however I was ecstatic to finally see and photograph my first new world elapid. Hopefully it won't be too long before I see my next ones. |
