説明In the Saint-Jermaine-des-Prés area of Paris there stands the 13th century Church of Saint-Sulpice. It is an imposing building only exceeded in size amongst Parisian churches by Notre-Dame. Like the Basilica of Notre-Dame in Montréal – and that in Paris for that matter – it has twin towers at either side of its west facade. Also like Notre-Dame in Montréal there is a large square at its western end with a monument in its centre. In the case of Montréal the square is La Place d’Armes and the centrepiece of the monument is a statue of Paul de Chomedey, sieur de Maisonneuve (1612-1676), a French military officer who is credited with being the founder of Montreal. It was at the Church Saint Sulpice in that the Society of Saint-Sulpice was born in 1641. The society’s principal aim was to educate a French priesthood that, at the time was regarded as ignorant and sometimes even decadent. Shortly after their foundation, the Sulpicians established themselves in Ville-Marie, a settlement of about 100 people on the southern shore of the Island of Montréal. Important amongst the pioneer Sulpicians was François Dollier de Casson who, in the 1680s, laid out a street plan for what was still known as Ville-Marie. It wasn’t until after Casson’s death in 1705 that Ville-Marie took on the name of Montréal. As well as their traditional work of training priests, the Sulpicians became missionaries to the indigenous people of the French colony of New France . They also established the parish of Notre-Dame in Ville-Marie and, in 1672, built a small church that they called Notre-Dame. Between 1684 and 1687 they built the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice beside the church. The Seminary still stands but, by the 1820s, the Notre-Dame congregation had grown beyond the capacity of its church and it was decided to build a larger one. The result was the present building which was designed by James O’Donnell , an Irish-American Anglican from New York. He died in 1830 by which time the main body of the church was complete. The first tower followed in 1841 and the second in 1843. At the time of its completion it was the largest church in North America and remain so for a further 50 years. During his visit to the city in April 1982, Pope John Paul II bestowed Basilica status upon the church. The original Notre Dame Church served as the Cathedral of the diocese of Montréal from 1821 to 1822 but, although there are five cathedrals within the City of Montréal, the present Church of Notre-Dame has never been one of them. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Montréal is administered from the Cathedral of Mary, Queen of the World in East Montréal. It also is a basilica, though of minor status.
