説明 | Early February 2015, Mike Whalen, Fire Management Specialist and Terah Malsam, Fire Mitigation and Education Specialist (detailed Public Affairs Officer) for the BLM Nevada Winnemucca District Office had the opportunity to teach students from the local high school’s special needs program about fire ecology in the Water Canyon Recreation Area. Despite the low temperatures, students huddled around to get a “hands on” experience while learning about fire’s role in the ecosystem.Whalen picked bunches of grass and brush, native and non-native, to show the students the various species that existed in the canyon. The students passed around the various grasses and brush, marveling at the smells and textures they experienced. He explained the history of fire that has come through the area and how it affects the growth of brush and grass and the long-term effects fire has on wildlife habitat. After his lesson, Malsam stepped in and spoke to the students about their role in fire prevention. She spoke about the importance of properly extinguishing a campfire and how wildfires not only negatively impact plants and wildlife, but our livelihood as well. The program was the first of its kind for the District’s Fire Mitigation and Education Program. Due to the success of this program, plans are already underway for another outdoor lesson later on in the year.Photo by BLM Nevada. |
