説明 | THE INTER-VARSITY FELLOWSHIPOF EVANGELICAL UNIONSGEN. SECRETARY D. JOHNSON, B.A., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P.HON. CO-TREASURERS: CLARENCE H. M. FOSTER ESQ. M.A. A. RENDLE SHORT ESQ, M.D., B.Sc., F.R.CS. 39, BEDFORD SQUARE LONDON, W. C. 1TELEPHONE MUSEUM 8097.21st June, 1937.Dear Naish,I have been asked by Inchley to write to you on the subject of Evolution, There are not very many good books on the subject, simply because it is difficult for a first-class biologist to write on the theme with much dogmatism, and unfortunately there are not many first-class biologists who are evangelicals. In addition it is usually impossible to convince people merely by argument. You may convince them intellectually, and yet leave them unconvinced. However, amongst the best books on the subject are the little 4 pamphlets by Rendle Short; also parts of his book: "The Bible & Modern Research." It might be worth giving your friend the whole book to read, as it might help him on other questions as well. There is also a book by D.G. Dewar - the C.S.S.M. would get it for you.Sir Ambrose Fleming, unfortunately, is not a biologist, although he did a little before he started on electrical engineering. But many biologists would take the view that he was not qualified to write on Evolution. However, if you think it would be of use, there is a book of his called "Evolution or Creation?" published by Marshall Morgan & Scott, and a recent one, called: "Intersecting spheres in Science Religion" - price 2/6.I am sending you a booklet by [Rendle Short] Alan Stuart, and also a private pamphlet, which I should like back. It was given me by the author, Professor Blair, and was written in response to a request from some teachers of Biology, who found it difficult to know how to deal with this subject. You can tell your friend that he is a first-class biologist, and embryologist, Regius Professor in Anatomy in Glasgow University. The main thing to remember is that two-thirds of the arguments in favour of Evolution are unproved, and I have never yet found anything in the Bible that was in contradiction to Science - although I worked under Professor Julian Huxley for a time, and had a good dose of his teaching! The whole argument rests on unproven hypothesis. However good they may be in philosophy, they still remain philosphical proofs, and not scientific. Science deals with absolute facts, which have been observed. Arguments based on facts which cannot be observed belong to the realm of Philosophy, and not that of true Science.I. V. F. Continuation -2-Of all the most unsatisfactory things I have ever met with, labelled "Science", the theory of Evolution is about the most muddle-headed, and absurd. I think the average man in the University just looks upon it as a convenient way of explaining things, which they simply do not know anything about. I have met extremely few medical students who took the thing very seriously.Another thing you should remember is that the word "Evolution" is used in 2 or 3 different senses.Hoping this will be some use to you,Yours very sincerely,Douglas JohnsonGeneral Secretary.P.S.Will you please let me have the enclosed booklets back. We do not want to circulate Professor Blair's widely. It was written, as I told you, in response to a private request. |
