説明 | SALEM, Ore. – Members of USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) led hands-on presentations about forestry and native plants during Oregon State University’s weeklong 4H summer camp, Aug. 13, 2015. About 160 middle school students from cities across the state attended the camp, and about 90 percent of those students come from minority backgrounds (African American, Latino, Native American and Asian). NRCS employees talked to the students about career options in natural resources, and demonstrated how to assess the age and health of a tree and how to identify several native Oregon plants. The camp is one of three weeklong camps hosted by Oregon State University’s 4-H team, with help from NRCS and other agencies and partners in the area. NRCS has an active partnership with OSU to support this annual summer camp. The camp is part of a larger effort to engage Latino students and other underserved youth in activities that will help them improve their academic skills, develop leadership skills, learn about career opportunities and how to prepare for them, and engage them in healthy physical activities.
