説明 | Many people are aware that bands and other marking devices are placed on birds. In order to place the band on the bird, we first have to catch it without harm so that it can be released again. Songbirds may be caught in mist nets, Canada geese are corralled when they are molting and flightless in summer, mallards and other ducks are caught in rocket fired nets over bait stations, and mourning doves may be caught with baited walk-in traps. This adult male mourning dove was captured with a baited walk-in trap on Seedskadee NWR. When captured, we determine if the dove is an adult or a juvenille born this year, whether it is male or female, and what stage of molt it is in before placing a uniquely numbered band on one leg. When the doves are caught again at Seedskadee NWR or elsewhere or when harvested by hunters, valuable information can be gained. Information such as longevity, ratio of juvenilles to adults in the population, harvest rates, migration routes, etc. is gained through a long term banding program.Mourning doves are one of the most abundant birds in North America, with an estimated 275 million dovesin the United States. Mourning doves are the most hunted migratory game bird species in the U.S. where 14,529,800 were harvested, by 857,300 hunters, spending 2,572,900 days afield (Mourning Dove Population Status 2014/USFWS). In addition, mourning doves are valued by the public in rural, suburban, and urban areas because they occur widely, nest around homes and farmsteads, and are frequent visitors to bird feeders. Their unique and easily recognized "mourning" call can be heard across the U.S.Mourning doves are thought of as primarily a bird of forests and farmlands, however they are very adaptable. Many mourning doves nest on Seedskadee NWR in both the cottonwoods and willows along the Green River and in the sagebrush and on the ground in the sage steppe.www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/Newreportspublications/Populat...Photo: Tom Koerner/USFWS |
