| 説明 | Paisley Abbey (St. Mirin, St. Milburga, St. Mary, St. James), 2 July 2015. Founded 1163 by Walter Fitzalan, High Steward of Scotland. It became and abbey in 1245. It was burnt down by an English army in 1307 but rebuilt in the following years. In 1498 the abbey again suffered a fire and in 1553 the tower collapsed, largely destroying the quire and north transept. The nave was then walled-off and used as the parish church whilst the choir was used as a graveyard! In 1858-62 the north porch was formed in the ruined transept which was fully restored in 1890-1907, following which the tower and choir were rebuilt/restored and a new ceiling fitted to the nave. Pictured is the 15th Century sexpartite vault of the St. Mirin chapel showing the rather curious extra rib (lower left) that was needed for some reason. |
