| 説明 | The gate into the Schöllenen gorge. A short tunnel with a length of 22 m, followed by a 372 m long gallery. According to a legend, the first bridge was built by the devil. The inhabitants have failed again and again with the construction of a bridge. The mayor frantically bursted out: 'The devil build the bridge!' As soon as he said it, the devil stood there and made a proposal for a deal. He would build the bridge, when he gets the soul of the one who goes as first over the bridge. The inhabitants agreed. As the devil had finished the bridge, the crafty inhabitants sent a billygoat as first over the bridge. The devil was furious and wanted to destroy the bridge. He went and took a huge boulder. Then a pious woman came along, and scratched a cross on the boulder. The devil was confused about the sign of God, and when he throwed the boulder onto the bridge he missed it. The boulder fell down the gorge up to Göschenen where you can admire it till today as Devil's Stone of 2000 tons. The devil throws still with stones, so the road is currently closed again.
