説明 | This shot of the village has been taken from the pier where CalMac ferry passengers disembark onto the historic island of Iona. Here in 563 Columba and his companions arrived from Ireland and established their religious settlement, from this foothold in the remote western Hebrides the Christianisation of Scotland began. On the site of today's Abbey (in centre of picture), Columba founded a place of learning and scholarship, enhanced by the art of the Illuminated Manurscripts and books produced here, the most famous, described as "the most wonderful book in the world" - The Book of Kells was written and illustrated here in Iona, and in its wake the development of the earliest of Scottish writing, books and literature. These were of course all the literatures of religion dedicated to the worship of God. But I don't think that it is too much of a stretch to think of Iona as the spiritual home and birthplace of all Scottish Literature. That legacy, the historical crosses and grave-stones in the Abbey, and not forgetting the super birdlife, are what brings me here. |
