説明 | This illustration, taken from the Seattle DOT web site, makes clear exactly what's wrong with the city's original implementation of shared lane markings. In a lane too narrow for a car to safely share side-by-side with a bicycle, the shared lane marking should be located in the center of the travel lane, to encourage proper sharing of the lane, sequentially, by all users.Instead, SDOT placed sharrows to the right, suggesting that motorists should squeeze past cyclists with dangerously inadequate passing distance, shown here at less than 18 inches of clearance in the left lane of the illustration. (Scale based on 40-inch width of shared lane markings per MUTCD.)When shared lane markings are misplaced like this, far too many people will mistake them as suggesting safe locations for bicyclists to operate, and as encouragement for dangerously close passing by drivers. |
