説明 | This slab shows two figures, a Greek and an Amazon, parts of a figure, a Greek, and two figures and a horse carved across the join between two slabs, an Amazon and unknown. On the left a mounted Amazon rides to the right over a casualty to attack a Greek who is being assailed from behind by another Amazon. The forepart of a horse of an Amazon, on the slab join, at the far left, rears up over a body, lying on the ground with the legs stretched out to the right. It is uncertain whether the body is that of a Greek or an Amazon. To the right a Greek, nude apart from an Attic helmet with long crest and shield, advances to the left towards the horse in a crouching position. He covers himself with his shield. His right hand held a sword. He seems unaware of the Amazon behind him. The Amazon strikes to the left with her hands raised above her head holding an axe. She wears a chiton, chlamys knotted around the waist and boots. To the right a Greek moves to the right over a fallen Amazon. The Greek wears a helmet with long crest, a short-sleeved chiton and scabbard and holds a shield. The Amazon, lying with her feet crossed, wears a chiton. Her upper body was on the adjacent slab (slab missing).Metal reins were inserted in drill-holes; the weapons were attached in metal, carved or may have been painted. Traces of paint remain on the slab.Source: www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collecti... |
