説明 | This statue of Ferdinand Magellan is in the Plaza de Armas close to the Cathedral. Written on the plaque is:"MDXX, Hernando de Magallanes: Monumento Legado por Jose Menendez e Inaugurado al Conmemorarse el IV Centenario del Descubrimiento del Estrecho, MCMXX". Which, being translated, is:1520Ferdinand Magellan: monument bequested by José Menéndez and inaugurated to commemorate the fourth centenary of the discovery of the Strait [of Magellan]1920. No doubt the people of Punta Arenas will soon be preparing to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Magellan's passage through the Strait. In his book Patagonia: A Cultural History, Chris Moss quotes a passage from José María Borrero's book about the ambitious and, some would say, ruthless José Menéndez. A young tourist and an old local man are imagined to be standing in front of the monument looking at the plaque. The young man opens a conversation:"Who is this José Menéndez, who is so familiar with Hernando de Magallanes?""Don't you know him?" said the old man."Not at all," replied the young man. "And I've read all about the history of the discovery of the Strait as I travelled here, and all the related stories, but this person is never mentioned.""Well you see," the venerable old man explained, with terrible, bloody irony, "he is nothing less than the avenger of Magallanes.""How is he the avenger?""Yes, sir, yes, the avenger. Don't doubt it. Doesn't history tell us how savages murdered Hernando de Magallanes on a Pacific island? Well, José Menéndez, with other men of the same stamp and standing, killed almost all the Indians on this other island in the Atlantic. . . . The dead is avenged."Menéndez and his family have a splendid mausoleum in Punta Arenas' cemetery. |
