説明 | Norton is a couple of miles north of Stockton-on-Tees and manages to keep an independent identity despite being absorbed into greater Stockton. The old village dates back to Saxon times and still boasts a fine green, off left of pic, and a grand pond too. The two buildings on the right, closest to camera both have door-plates proclaiming "Norton Hall". The original building has been converted into flats, in the old days it was known as Norton House and belonged to Thomas Jefferson Hogg, a member of a well-to-do local family. Hogg became a barrister, though his practice was spasmodic perhaps because of his writing activities, which in themselves were never terribly successful. His best remembered work is an early biography of Perch Bysshe Shelley whom he befriended at Oxford University. A friendship strained somewhat by his romantic interest in Shelly's second wife: Mary - the author of Frankenstein and daughter of Mary Wolstencraft. One of Thomas Hoggs early writings was a pamphleteering joint effort with Shelley on Atheism; while they were students at Oxford. This produced a scandal that led to their expulsion. Hogg's biography of Shelley can be purchased from Amazon but I fancy its made available on a print to order basis, better to download it free of charge from the excellent Project Gutenberg. I'm not very good on Shelly's poetry, Ozymandias springs to mind but I can also recall the following but I can't for the life of me remember exactly where its from, so I hope I'm not wrong in attributing it to him:"And dreams of things that never dieBright visions come to meAs often times I used to lieGazing into a summer skyWatching the sailing clouds go by"I love the notion of "dreams of things that never die".Percy Bysshe Shelley 1792-1822Thomas Jefferson Hogg 1792-1862 |
