(public display, Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Denver, Colorado)This is a high-grade gold ore sample from the Smuggler-Union Mine in southwestern Colorado's San Juan Mountains. This mine was famous for its consistently high-grade ores, which produced gold and silver. The mineralization here occurs in hydrothermal veins hosted in Tertiary volcanic rocks.The specimen shown above was collected in the late 1800s and was donated to the Colorado Scientific Society.
