説明A13_0043 How to Make an Apollo Bomb 6/15/70 Photo from NASANASA or USGS No: Figure 4-1A Diagram of the interior of an Apollo SM oxygen tank like the one that exploded on Apollo 13. This diagram was originally published as Figure 4-1 (page 4-3) from the Final Report of the Apollo 13 Review Board, dated June 15, 1970. The image shown here was scanned from Apollo Expeditions to the Moon, Cortright, E. M., Ed., NASA SP-350, 1975, p. 253. “[T]he tank, damaged from 8 hours overheating, was a potential bomb the next time it was filled with oxygen. That bomb exploded on April 13, 1970 - 200,000 miles from Earth.” - Jim Lovell, Apollo Expeditions to the Moon, Cortright, E. M., Ed., NASA SP-350, 1975, p. 263.NASA Caption: “Oxygen tank No. 2 overheated and blew up because its heater switches welded shut during excessive prelaunch electrical currents. Interior diagram of three-foot-tall oxygen tank No. 2 shows vertical heater tube and quantity measurement tube. Heater tube combines two 1800-rpm motors to stir tank's 320 pounds of liquid oxygen. Note thermostat at top. Two switches were supposed to open heater circuit when temperature reached 80° F, but spacecraft power supply had been changed from 28 to 65 Vdc - while contractors and NASA test teams nodded - so switches welded shut and heater tube temperature probably reached 1000° F.” (Caption for upper left figure on page 253 of: Apollo Expeditions to the Moon, Cortright, E. M., Ed., NASA SP-350, 1975.)This image is part of a collection to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the Apollo 13 Mission. The San Diego Air and Space Museum is celebrating the 2015 Centennial of the Pan American Exposition by honoring one of the most memorable space flights in history. The Apollo 13 crew, astronauts Jim Lovell and Fred Haise, join the San Diego Air & Space Museum Saturday, March 21st for a rare 45th Anniversary Celebration appearance and personal recap of their historic mission. The celebration also honors the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo race to the moon and those people who made it happen.---Repository: San Diego Air and Space Museum
