| 説明 | Cadishead and Irlam Guardian 1982.Life at the locks was never dull.Discovering dead bodies, hauling cyclists out of the canal with a rope and losing a contact lens on the jetty at Irlam Locks are all incidents that stand out in lockmaster Thomas Groom's mind.For Thomas, aged 65, of 23 Lyndhurst Avenue, Irlam, has had an interesting and often amusing life during the 33 years he has worked on the Manchester Ship Canal locks. His staff still muse over the time when they were asked to get down on their hands and knees to scour the jetty after one of his contact lenses fell out.This and other stories will give Thomas something to think about in his retirement apart from visiting two of his children, Brian and Linda, in New Zealand he aims to take it easy from now on.He started in charge of Irlam Ferry. He was ferrykeeper for about 12 months and was later moved to Barton locks and he was trained by an old sailing master Jack Brockett. He moved on again to Irlam where he has worked for about 14 years as lockmaster.Thomas once rescued two young cyclists who plunged headlong into the 45 feet deep lock with a rope. He received letters of commendation from both the boys' fathers."I am sad to leave. I have had some good times here. I intend to do absolutely nothing in my retirement. After 50 years of work I have had enough," said Thomas.Friends and colleagues at Irlam locks presented him with travel goods for his trip to New Zealand during a ceremony at the locks on Monday afternoon. The gift was presented by Captain Scrivens.Thomas is married to Minnie and they have three children, Brian, Linda and Joyce as well as grandchildren and one great grandchild. |
