説明 | St. Catherine’s Church in Meath Street reopened it's doors on Sunday 15th December 2013.This church has a number quirks, including the bust of Kevin Barry masquerading as a saint, which was installed in the early 1920s by a priest with strong political views.St. Catherine's is a Roman Catholic church on Meath Street. It is was dedicated in 1858 and is the second church to occupy the same site. There is also a small grotto dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes located on the grounds.The first building was an octagonal chapel which opened in 1782. The chapel and a presbytery were knocked down to make way for a bigger church. The foundation stone of the new church was laid on 30 June 1852. The architect was James Joseph McCarthy and construction of the main church was completed in March 1857, but the original design of the upper portion of the tower and spire were never completed. Many elements of the church were still being completed right up to the 1950’s. The church was dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria on 30 June 1858.James Joyce's first short story, The Sisters, concerns a former priest of St. Catherine's Church, Meath Street.The church suffered extensive fire damage in January 2012. The fire was the result of an arson attack. A 49-year-old homeless man admitted setting the straw in the Christmas crib alight. |
