説明 | Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ, a national landmark (1896). Percival Lowell was an eccentric Harvard graduate who found great success writing about his travels in Japan and Korea. However, his first interest was astronomy, particularly the work of Giovanni Schiaparelli. In 1877, Schiaparelli noted channels on Mars--canali in italian--and because of the mistranslation, many like Lowell believed that there were artificially contructed canals on Mars. Lowell dedicated the rest of his life to proving that there was life on Mars. Flagstaff has particularly clear skies, so he set up an observation site on a nearby mountain. Aside from his work studying Mars, Lowell noticed that Neptune did not have a proper orbit. By studying the orbit, he deduced that there must be another planet influencing it. Lowell, however, did not live to see it discovered. His hypothesized Planet X, later called Pluto, was discovered at Lowell Observatory by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. While studying here, A. E. Douglass determined that wood growth correlated with the solar cycle, establishing the popular dendochronology method of determining the age of a tree by its rings. Vesto Slipher noted in his work on the motions of galaxy that the universe must be expanding. The rings of Uranus were co-discovered here in 1977. |
