説明Arthur Blyth came to SA in 1839. He was a successful iron merchant and trader. He entered politics in both the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council. He served 1857-1868 and again 1870 to 1877. He was Commissioner of Public works, Treasurer, Chief Secretary and finally Premier of South Australia 1864-65. He returned to England in 1868 but came back to SA again in 1870. He then became Premier of South Australia again 1871 to 1872 and again 1873 to 1875. Whilst Premier he ignored the warnings of the Survey General George Goyder by allowing land settlement for farmers beyond the Goyder Line. This only ended in disaster for the poor farmers and the South Australian economy. In 1847 he commissioned the Assistant Surveyor General under Colonel William Light, George Kingston to design him a grand house at Mitcham. Rust Hall is deemed one of Kingston’s best architectural structures with its 10 rooms, cedar joinery, slate roof and arcaded loggia facing west. When Blyth returned to England in 1868 he sold Rust Hall to the Page family. The Hundred of Blyth (1860) was named after Arthur Blyth as was the township of Blyth( founded 1875) and Blythewood Road which led to the bottom of the hill where he built Rust Hall. Near the end of his life Arthur Blyth returned to England as Agent General for South Australia. He was knighted there and died in 1891.
