| 説明 | In 1877 a new governor for South Australia arrived named Sir William Jervois. He immediately engaged an Adelaide architect William McMinn to plan a grand summer retreat s that he could escape the summer heat of Adelaide. The government chose land in the cooler Adelaide Hills. McMinn designed a 40 roomed mansion but due to funding restraints only 26 rooms were built plus servants quarters etc and a 70 feet high tower. Marble Hill as it was known became the Governors summer house thereafter until a bushfire swept through the hills and destroyed Marble Hill totally. The Governor of that day Sir Robert George had to shelter with his family and staff under wet blankets along the driveway to escape with their lives. This was on Black Sunday January 2nd 1955 . The mansion is now being restored and rebuilt. |
