説明 | More than 170 Wiesbaden Middle School seventh-grade students visit Rheinblick Golf Course for a STEM field trip April 2 in Wiesbaden, Germany. The students cycled through four stations –- Golf Course Management, Irrigation Pond, Wetland and Pollinator, and Using a Golf Course –- set up by volunteer experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District Environmental Branch and Rheinblick. During the visit, students explored various areas of the golf course including a lined irrigation pond, developed a as a water reservoir and wildlife habitat. They learned about the species living in the pond, including frogs, who are currently mating. The females lay 600 to 4,000 eggs each, according to Jessica Haerter-Ratchford, a district environmental protection specialist. Another highlight included a presentation by Gerald Beierschmitt, the golf course superintendent, on soil sampling. He discussed his role in maintaining the course and the need to test for nutrients present in the soil. Beierschmitt uses soil tests as a tool to gather data on the health of the soil. By gathering results, he can determine if fertilizer is needed to add nutrients and grow healthy grass on the fairways and greens. The course, which opened in 1947 when the U.S. acquired the former tank training area from Germany, provided a natural environment for STEM exploration and students’ hands-on learning.
