Eight Christians leaders facing court today following a peaceful sit-in at the office of Foreign Minister Julie Bishop last month are calling for the release of the 135 children currently locked-up on Nauru and for an end to offshore detention. The eight Christian leaders were arrested, strip searched and charged with trespass on 10 December 2014 after a peaceful sit-in at the Foreign Minister’s Subiaco office which was part of the #LoveMakesAWay national day of action. Love Makes a Way is a national movement of Christians seeking an end to Australia's inhumane asylum seeker policies through prayer and nonviolent love in action.“The 135 children currently in limbo on Nauru are a living sign of the humanity of all 1930 people in offshore detention,” said Pastor Jarrod McKenna of WestCity Church of Christ.“Instead of strip searching Church leaders our nation needs to be searching its heart for a humane response to those seeking safety,” said Pastor McKenna.“Today we call on the Government to make a public commitment to release the 135 children currently imprisoned on Nauru. These children have been cruelly shipped off, locked-up, and left in limbo, deprived of their precious childhoods,” said Reverend Lorna Green, Anglican Rector of Serpentine-Jarrahdale. “Refugees are people, it is as simple as that. All people deserve to have a safe home and not one of the 1930 people currently locked up in offshore detention deserve to have their future frozen indefinitely,” said Teresa Lee, First Home Project Co-Founder.“We say to these children and all those people locked up on Manus Island and Nauru: we see you and we won’t give up on you,” said Pastor Alex McKellar from WA’s largest church, Riverview.WA Greens Senator Scott Ludlam is attending court with the group this morning.“The Love Makes A Way group are taking the campaign to those who need to hear it,” said Senator Ludlam.“I have great respect for their courage not be silent and I am proud of their action to stand up for refugees seeking asylum in Australia,” he said.WA Labor Senator Sue Lines also offered her support."The time for humane treatment of those seeking refuge is long overdue," said Senator Lines.***Note: Pastor Jarrod McKenna (WestCity Church of Christ), Reverend Lorna Green, (Anglican Rector of Serpentine-Jarrahdale), Teresa Lee (First Home Project Co-Founder), Pastor Alex McKellar (from WA’s largest church, Riverview) — quoted in this release — are among the eight Christian leaders facing court in Perth today. |
