説明Kalangadoo. The large pastoral estate here was Kalangadoo station taken up by John Hunter and his brothers in 1845. The leasehold covered 60 square miles. They built an early homestead which was destroyed in the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires. When the government started surveyed and selling freehold land in 1854 the Hunters sold their much reduced in size leasehold and freehold lands to Hastings Cunningham. It was at this time that 9,111 acres went to Crouch who created Lowan station with a 10 roomed homestead built near the present boundaries of Kalangadoo. Then in 1871 Cunningham sold his freehold Kalangadoo station to Mr T.H. Morris. It was then less than 10,000 acres in size. Morris immediately built a grand new two storey homestead called Kalangadoo House about 4 kms north east of the town. Morris wife occupied the property after his death until she too died in 1904 when the government acquired Kalangadoo station for closer settlement. The government put up thirty two farmlets for sale in 1905 and a son of H Morris purchased Kalangadoo homestead and 1,400 acres as his own property. The Morris family finally sold this property for soldier settler blocks after World War Two. Today Kalangadoo House sits on a 50 acre property. The other big property of the district was Koorine station owned by George and John Riddoch of Glencoe, Coonawarra Fruit Colony and Yallum Park stations. They dissolved their partnership in 1898 when they had over 75,000 acres of freehold land. When the partnership dissolved George took 20,000 acres of the former Glencoe run and established Koorine run near Kalangadoo. He became the “laird “of Mount Gambier Glencoe and Kalangadoo. Brother John kept Yallum Park and the Coonawarra Fruit Colony and winery and became the”laird “of Penola. In 1905 George Riddoch built Koorine homestead which was visited by British Royalty but it was totally destroyed in the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983. Riddoch’s estate did not last long as a huge 20,000 acre property. Much of it was acquired for soldier settler blocks in 1920 after World War One. Riddoch was a great patron of Kalangadoo and donated to the Presbyterian Church and laid the foundation stone and he donated for improvements to the Anglican Church. He opened the new stone school rooms in 1904 and he even opened the cheese factory in Kalangadoo in 1916. It operated until 1952. After he died in 1919 the old Kalangadoo stone Institute was renamed the Riddoch Memorial Hall. (The original iron and wood institute hall opened in 1899 and was replaced by the stone one in 1913.) Riddoch was a canny Scottish businessman and he subdivided small parts of his 20,000 acre Koorine property into small farmlets for potato growing and pig raising on several occasions. He first sold 26 farms around Kalangadoo in 1901.He sold a further 19 farms in 1905 and an additional 20 farms in 1906. He took good advantage of the fertile soils and the 750 to 800 mm annual rainfall which meant small properties of 50 acres or so were viable for small scale farming. Kalangadoo had an early start as a town of this name was surveyed by the government in 1859. Almost all the blocks were purchased by the Leake brothers of Glencoe and the town did not develop. So Kalangadoo East was gazetted in 1892. The railway had passed along the boundary of Riddoch’s property in 1887 so it was a logical place for a town. The early public buildings were: the railway station 1907; the Kalangadoo Hotel 1902; the Presbyterian Church 1913; the Methodist Church 1906 ( the newer one was erected in 1956); the school 1904; the Catholic Church 1904; the first Anglican Church 1915; the first Police Station 1937 and the Post Office 1913. The early pastoralists in this part of the South East made money, subdued the Aboriginals and introduced sheep to the landscape but seldom left lasting legacies on the landscape apart from a few woolsheds and homesteads. It was the farmers from around 1900 who tamed the landscape, built houses, developed the land and promoted the growth and commerce of the towns such as Kalangadoo, Penola, Naracoorte, Millicent and Mount Gambier itself.
