説明 | Native, warm-season, perennial grass to 60 cm tall. Stems are compressed, tend to be wiry, often branched from upper nodes and carry very little leaf. Flowerheads are dense, broad, brush-like panicles, often tinged with purple. Florets have a three-branched awn. Flowering is from late spring to autumn. Grows in grassland and open woodland on loamy to sandy soils of low fertility. In some areas can become the dominant grass due to overgrazing of more desirable species. Produces most growth in spring and autumn. Young growth is grazed, but mature growth is of very low grazing value. Seeds cause damage to eyes, flesh, etc of animals, but of lesser problem than other wire grasses. Manage to allow other, more desirable species to flower, set seed and recover from grazing. These plants were growing in Queanbeyan Nature Reserve next to a track. |
