| 説明 | Representatives from the U.S., Georgia and U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees office take part in a groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 27 to mark the start of construction for the Georgia Asylum Seeker Center’s new wing in Martkopi. Project engineer Gwen Nelson of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District’s Caucasus Project Office guided a group of VIPs that included: U.S. Ambassador Richard Norland; Garsevan Nioradze, head of Gardabani municipality; Georgia Minister of Refugee Affairs Sozar Subari and Joseph Katsitadze, the asylum seeker center’s director. The $800,000 project will complement ongoing efforts by the U.S. Embassy, U.S. Agency for International Development and UNHCR to assist the MRA in taking care of its own refugee population while doubling the center’s capacity to house and assist people who have fled their countries to seek asylum in Georgia. The new 13,500-square-foot wing will provide much-needed additional hygienic living conditions for the influx of refugees and asylum seekers. It will feature new male and female bathrooms, as well as kitchen areas to provide healthy spaces for families temporarily housed there. The Georgia Asylum Seeker Center has processed more than 1,500 refugees since its construction in 2010. (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers courtesy photo) |
