| 説明 | In a battle of bikes vs buses a "protectors' peloton" faced off against the Halliburton gas frackers in a convoy to the controversial coal seam gas fracking site in Gloucester this morning. The "protectors' peloton" of local residents and their supporters on bicycles sent a message to coal seam gas company AGL that it is not welcome in Gloucester. The group was joined by Gloucester Shire Councillor Aled Hoggett who yesterday announced his resignation from the "Gloucester Dialogue". The "Gloucester Dialogue" is a State Government sponsored committee, chaired by the NSW Land and Water Commissioner Jock Laurie, to examine with stakeholders AGL's Gloucester coal seam gas project.Councillor Hoggett addressed the group at the gate of the fracking site this morning, echoing the comments he made in a his statement yesterday where he said the Gloucester Dialogue is an opaque and failed process that "creates an illusion of consultation where in fact none exists"."In my view AGL does not have a social licence to operate its CSG field in Gloucester."I strongly believe that, despite an overbearing PR effort by AGL aimed at our small community, it is no closer to obtaining a social licence than it was 12 months ago," said Councillor Hoggett.Manning Valley resident and author of Rich Land Wasteland Sharyn Munro was among those who cycled to the AGL site this morning. "We are here to say no to the cycle of destruction AGL is unleashing with its dangerous coal seam gas fracking in this valley," she said."There are tens of thousands of people in the Manning Valley downstream of here as well as Gloucester and the Manning's sustainable local beef, dairy and horticulture industries that rely on clean and abundant water. Our water must not be put at risk so AGL can make a quick buck," said Munro."Coal seam gas operations have already contaminated water with uranium and other toxic chemicals in north west NSW and that is not a risk we are willing to take here."We are calling on the NSW Government to suspend all coal seam gas operations at Gloucester until it has thoroughly assessed this region's complex geology and implemented all of the Chief Scientist's recommendations," said Munro. The fracking of four coal seam gas wells at Gloucester was approved by NSW Resources Minister Anthony Roberts in August 2014. AGL is planning to drill and frack 110 coal seam gas wells in the first stage of operations in Gloucester. There has been ongoing peaceful direct action protests for the last fortnight against AGL's Gloucester Gas Project.Read on the website: www.protectgloucester.org/tourdegloucester |
