説明 | Melrose. Mt Remarkable had been discovered and named by Edward John Eyre in 1840. Melrose, the town at its foot, claims to be the first town in the north of the state but Port Augusta also claims this. Most Special Surveys were conducted 1839/40 but a few later ones were allowed for mining. These included the Burra Special Survey of 20,000 acres in 1845 and the Mount Remarkable Special Survey of 1846 for Frederick Dutton of Anlaby and A.L Elder. Copper mining at Melrose started in 1846 but ceased in 1851. The mining company started with capital of £25,000. Although sulphuret of copper was plentiful no really productive lodes of copper were ever discovered. £3,000 was spent on mine works and a tunnel of 60 feet in length was left behind and not much else. In 1856 John Howard Angas of Collingrove Estate near Angaston bought up the lands of the Mt Remarkable Special Survey to start a cattle and sheep run. As his wealth expanded he bought up more runs including Hill River near Clare where he later lived. In 1882 this run was sold to the Willowie Land and Pastoral Company and the large shearing shed on this property is classified by the National Trust. Angas remained a major shareholder for the Willowie Land and Pastoral Company. Parts of the mining property Special Survey were cut into 80 acre sections for sale to the public and a town was laid out at the northern (Melrose) and southern (Bangor) ends of the property. Mr. T.F. Nott, after whom one of the streets of Melrose is named, did the town survey in 1853. On the first day of the sale about 8,000 acres were sold. In terms of general farming and settlement the Hundred of Willowie was declared in 1875 and adjoining Booleroo in 1878. Most settlers moved to the district at this time, but Melrose did gradually develop from the mid 1850s. The town was named after Melrose in Scotland, the home place of Mr. Elder one of the Mt Remarkable Special Survey owners. Some buildings, like the police station pre-dated the establishment of the town as the mining community needed a police station- and got one- in 1848. Hence the Melrose claim to be the oldest town in the north of SA. Other early buildings in Melrose, apart from residential cottages from the 1850s, include the Court House 1862, the hotel from 1857, and the Post Office from 1865. Bluey Blundstone’s Blacksmith shop dates from 1865. This is open as a cafe- museum so make sure you visit this fascinating establishment. The National Trust runs the museum in the Old Court House. The police station has an interesting history as apart from the mining, the police presence was required to control the local Ngadjuri Aboriginal people. Melrose police remained the most northerly police post until the police station opened in Port Augusta in 1855. Relations between Aborigines and settlers deteriorated in Melrose and in 1853 the government appointed a Sub-Protector of Aborigines to the town. The treatment of Aborigines then improved but regardless of this by 1883 fewer than 25 Aborigines were living in the district. The oldest cottages to look for are: the pug cottage with the steep German style hipped roof in Survey Street dating from 1859; and the pug and native pine white washed cottage in Lambert Street dating from the 1850s. A brewery was opened 1869 but the building still standing was erected in later in 1878 as a flour mill. Charles Henry Gray was the first brewer in Melrose followed by the Jacka brothers. Their beer was well received by the drinking public and they sold Melrose beer from Broken Hill to Lyndhurst. The Jacka brothers expanded the brewery business when they bought the former flour mill in 1894 they converted it to their new brewery. The brewery closed in 1934. The Mt Remarkable Hotel opposite the post office dates from the 1857. Alligator Gorge and Mambray Creek were gazetted as Pleasure Parks by the government in 1952 and finally they were amalgamated into the Mt Remarkable National Park which was gazetted in 1972. The range is composed of steeply dipping, 800-million-year old sandstone which forms a massive range which is steeper on the eastern side. Mt Remarkable summit is 960 metres high (3,150 feet), and the annual rainfall of Melrose is 600mm, about 50mm more than Adelaide’s average annual rainfall. The rainfall is sternly influenced by the proximity of Melrose to the mountain range and at Wilmington the average annual rainfall falls back to 450mm. |
